BTM Price

Plavix 75mg $143 $25
Liptior 20mg $120 $22

Celebrex  total drug cost for 12 months full retail $119 x 12 = $1,428

Mary Pays

  • $310 deductible
  • 25% of $2,520 = $630
  • Mary then must pay 100% $4,584 - $2,830 = $1,754

Total Mary spends with Medicare Plan D  $310 (Deductible) + $630 (25% of drug cost)  + $1,754  - $250 (rebate) = $2,444.

With BetterThanMedicare.com

Stan is taking Plavix 75mg one per day, Celebrex 200mg one per day and Oxycontin 30mg 1 tablet twice a day. Listed below are the prices for a 30 day supply.

Drug Name

Cost at Retail Drugstore
(No Medicare)

BTM Price

Plavix 75mg $143 $25
Celebrex 200mg $119 $23
Oxycontin 30mg $330 Not available

Plavix total drug cost for 12 months full retail $143 x 12=$1,716
Celebrex  total drug cost for 12 months full retail $119 x 12=$1,428
Oxycontin total drug cost for 12 months full retail $330 x 12 = $3,960
Total spend with No Medicare $7104

In the USA with Medicare Stan pays a $310 deductible and then he must pay 25% of the drug cost until he has spent $2,405 and then he must pay 100% until his total out of pocket cost reaches $4,550.  He is also eligible for a $250 rebate when he enters the "doughnut hole".

Stan Pays

  • $310 deductible
  • 25% of $2,520 = $630
  • Stan then must pay 100% in the doughnut hole ($3,610) until total out of pocket is $4,550. Total value of medication is $7,104. Stan has paid $4,550 and Medicare has paid $1,890 for a total of $6,440 and now Stan pays 5% for the rest of the year $7,104 - $6,440 = $664 x 5%= $33 for a total Stan spends with Medicare $4,550 + $33 = $4,583 - $250 (rebate) = $4,333.

Total spend with Medicare $4,333

With a combination of Medicare and Betterthanmedicare

With Betterthanmedicare
Plavix 75mg $25 x 12=$300 + Celebrex 200mg $23 x 12=$276

With Medicare
Stan pays for Oxycontin (total price $3,960) $310 deductible  then 25% of $2,520 = $630 (25% of drug cost) then 100% of the rest ($1,130). So $310 + $630 + $1,130 = $2,070 - $250 (rebate) = $1,820 for the Oxycontin.

So the total Stan pays with the combined BTM and Medicare is $300 (Plavix) + $276 (Celebrex) + $1,820 (Oxycontin and Medicare fees) = $2,396 vs. $4,333.

Total spend with Medicare and Betterthanmedicare combined = $2,396

A saving of $1,937 vs. Medicare alone
